Understanding Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection of the structures that support the teeth — the gums, the periodontal ligament, and the underlying jawbone — and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide. It begins with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and progresses to periodontitis if left untreated, causing irreversible bone loss around the teeth and ultimately tooth loss. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to preserve the natural tooth support structure.

Whether you have been diagnosed with early-stage gingivitis, moderate periodontitis, or advanced gum disease requiring surgical intervention, expert periodontal treatment in Turkey can stop the progression, restore gum health, and protect your remaining teeth for the long term. The sooner the disease is addressed, the more of your natural bone and tissue can be preserved.

At Dent Group International in Antalya, our periodontal team offers a full range of non-surgical and surgical gum disease treatments for international patients, delivered to EU clinical standards. For many patients, periodontal treatment is also an essential first step before implants, veneers, or other restorative work — and our team coordinates all elements of your care seamlessly within a single visit where possible.

Stages of Gum Disease

Periodontal disease progresses through clearly defined stages, each requiring a different level of intervention. Your clinical team will assess the extent of your condition using clinical probing and X-rays on your first appointment in Antalya.

Comprehensive Periodontal Care

Dent Group International offers a comprehensive range of periodontal treatments in Turkey, from initial non-surgical therapy through to advanced surgical procedures and long-term maintenance programmes. The treatment selected depends on the stage of disease, the depth of periodontal pockets, and the extent of bone loss identified during your assessment.

1. Professional Scaling & Polish

The foundation of periodontal care and the starting point for all patients presenting with gum concerns. Removal of all supragingival (above gum line) tartar, calculus, plaque, and surface staining using ultrasonic and hand scalers, followed by tooth polishing to smooth the enamel surface and resist future plaque accumulation. Recommended every 6 months as part of a periodontal maintenance programme.

2. Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and root planing is the primary non-surgical treatment for mild to moderate periodontitis. It is carried out under local anaesthesia for complete comfort, using ultrasonic and hand instruments to remove subgingival (below gum line) calculus and biofilm. Root surfaces are planed to a smooth finish to prevent bacterial reattachment. Typically completed in two to four sessions, treating one quadrant or half of the mouth at a time. Reduces pocket depths, controls inflammation, and halts disease progression in the majority of cases. Post-treatment review at 6 to 8 weeks assesses healing and residual pocket depths.

3. Adjunctive Antibiotic Therapy

In cases of aggressive or refractory periodontitis, localised or systemic antibiotic therapy may be prescribed alongside mechanical treatment to eliminate bacteria that cannot be reached by instruments alone. Locally delivered antibiotics are placed directly into periodontal pockets at treatment; systemic antibiotics are prescribed when generalised aggressive disease is present. Antibiotic selection is based on clinical presentation and, where indicated, microbiological testing.

4. Periodontal Surgery

Where non-surgical therapy does not fully resolve disease activity — or where pocket depths and bone loss are too severe to manage conservatively — periodontal surgery is required. Our surgical team in Antalya is experienced in the full range of periodontal surgical procedures.

Flap surgery (open debridement) involves gently reflecting the gum tissue to allow direct access to the root surfaces and bone, where deep calculus deposits and diseased tissue are removed under direct vision. The gum is then repositioned and sutured, significantly reducing pocket depths.

Bone grafting is performed where bone loss has occurred around a tooth. Grafting material is placed to encourage regeneration, with guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes supporting the healing process. Frequently combined with flap surgery in the same procedure.

Gum grafting addresses gum recession that has exposed root surfaces. Connective tissue grafts harvested from the palate or sourced from a tissue bank cover exposed roots, reduce sensitivity, and improve the appearance of the gum line. Also used to increase the width of keratinised gum tissue around implants.

5. Laser Periodontal Therapy

Laser therapy is an adjunctive treatment used alongside conventional periodontal procedures to decontaminate periodontal pockets, stimulate tissue healing, and reduce bacterial load with minimal discomfort. A diode laser targets and destroys bacterial biofilm within the periodontal pocket, promotes regeneration of the junctional epithelium and connective tissue attachment, and reduces post-treatment discomfort and swelling. Used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing or flap surgery, not as a standalone replacement.

6. Periodontal Maintenance Programme

Following active periodontal treatment, long-term supportive maintenance is essential to prevent disease recurrence. Dent Group International provides structured maintenance programmes for international patients, combining in-clinic visits with remote monitoring. Regular periodontal review appointments every 3 to 6 months, clinical pocket depth measurements and bone level monitoring, professional supragingival and subgingival cleaning at each visit, oral hygiene assessment and reinforcement, and remote follow-up and guidance for patients maintaining care with their UK dentist between visits.

Periodontal Treatment Before Implants or Cosmetic Work

Active gum disease must be fully resolved before any implant placement, veneer preparation, or other restorative treatment can begin. Placing implants or veneers in a mouth with untreated periodontitis significantly increases the risk of treatment failure, peri-implantitis, and long-term complications. For this reason, every patient with signs of gum disease undergoes a comprehensive periodontal assessment as the first step in any restorative treatment plan.

Why periodontal health matters for restorative treatments

TreatmentWhy Periodontal Health Matters
Dental implantsPeri-implantitis (implant gum disease) is more likely in patients with a history of periodontitis. Active disease must be resolved and maintained before implant placement.
Porcelain or laminate veneersHealthy, stable gums are required before veneer preparation. Inflamed or receding gums will affect the appearance of the veneer margin over time.
Zirconia crownsCrown margins must seal against healthy gum tissue. Active gum disease compromises the seal, leading to secondary decay and crown failure.
Full mouth restorationComprehensive restorative work requires a stable periodontal foundation. Treatment planning always begins with periodontal assessment and stabilisation.

Where periodontal treatment is required before other planned procedures, our team integrates the full treatment plan into your visit schedule — completing gum treatment first, then proceeding with cosmetic or restorative work once health is established.

You should seek periodontal assessment if you experience:

Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing — the earliest warning sign
Red, swollen, or tender gums (especially around the gum line)
Persistent bad breath (halitosis) or a bad taste in the mouth
Receding gums or teeth that appear longer than they used to
Loose or shifting teeth, or changes in how your bite feels
Pus or discharge between the gum and tooth
A diagnosis of gum disease that has not received specialist treatment
Plans for implants, veneers, or crowns that require a healthy periodontal foundation

Step by Step: Your Periodontal Journey

The duration of your visit depends on the severity and extent of your gum disease — typically 3 to 10 days in Antalya. A professional scale and polish can be completed in a single appointment; full-mouth scaling and root planing requires 3 to 5 days; and surgical procedures (flap surgery, bone grafting, gum grafting) require 5 to 10 days, allowing for pre-operative assessment, the procedure itself, and a post-operative review before departure.

Why Get Periodontal Treatment in Turkey?

For UK patients, access to specialist periodontal care through the NHS is extremely limited — waiting lists for specialist referrals can stretch to months or years, and private specialist fees in the UK are among the highest in Europe. Turkey offers a clinically equivalent standard of care delivered by experienced periodontists, at a cost that makes comprehensive treatment genuinely accessible. Our team in Antalya can typically schedule periodontal assessments and active treatment within days of your first contact.

Access to Specialist Care Without NHS Waiting Lists

At Dent Group International, periodontal assessments and treatment can typically be scheduled within days of your first contact. There are no referral waiting lists, no lengthy triage processes, and no rationing of treatment based on NHS funding constraints. Patients who have been told they face long waits for specialist periodontal care in the UK regularly travel to Antalya and complete a full course of treatment within a single visit.

Integrated Treatment Planning

One of the most significant advantages of receiving periodontal treatment at Dent Group International is the ability to address gum disease and restorative or cosmetic needs within the same overall treatment plan. Patients who need periodontal treatment before implants, veneers, or crowns can have both phases planned and coordinated by the same clinical team, minimising the number of separate trips required and ensuring a seamless transition from periodontal health to restorative work.

Experienced Periodontal Team in Antalya

Our periodontal specialists in Antalya have extensive experience treating both routine and complex gum disease cases, including patients with aggressive periodontitis, severe bone loss, and those requiring surgical reconstruction of lost periodontal tissues. All procedures are carried out in our fully equipped surgical suites with EU-standard sterilisation and infection control protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — at an appropriately equipped and accredited clinic. Dent Group International carries out all surgical procedures in a fully equipped surgical environment with EU-standard sterilisation protocols, appropriate anaesthesia, and experienced periodontists. We provide all patients with complete clinical records before departure, ensuring continuity of care with their UK dental team.
Gingivitis — the earliest stage of gum disease — is fully reversible with professional treatment and improved oral hygiene. Periodontitis, however, involves permanent loss of supporting bone and tissue that cannot be regenerated to its original state. The goal of periodontal treatment is to arrest the disease, stabilise what remains, and prevent further deterioration. With correct treatment and long-term maintenance, most patients with periodontitis can retain their natural teeth for many years.
Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums only — it causes bleeding, redness, and mild swelling but no permanent damage, and it is fully reversible with treatment and improved hygiene. Periodontitis is the next stage, where the inflammation has spread to the supporting bone and ligament around the teeth. Periodontitis causes irreversible bone loss and requires more intensive treatment to arrest progression and stabilise the affected teeth.
This depends entirely on the severity and extent of your disease. A professional scale and polish can be completed in a single appointment. A full course of scaling and root planing across the whole mouth typically requires 3 to 5 days. Patients requiring surgical procedures — flap surgery, bone grafting, or gum grafting — should plan for 5 to 10 days, allowing for pre-operative assessment, the procedure itself, and a post-operative review before departure.
If you have active gum disease, yes — without exception. Placing implants into a mouth with untreated periodontitis dramatically increases the risk of peri-implantitis, implant failure, and ongoing bone loss. Our implant team will not proceed with implant surgery until the periodontal condition is fully stabilised. For patients who need both periodontal treatment and implants, we plan and sequence both phases of treatment during your consultation.
In many cases, yes. Minor periodontal treatment such as scaling and root planing can often be completed alongside cosmetic or restorative procedures within the same visit. More extensive periodontal surgery, however, requires a healing period before other treatments proceed. Our clinical team will design a sequenced treatment plan during your consultation, clearly outlining what can be achieved in a single visit and what will require a follow-up appointment.
It is common for the gum line to appear slightly lower after scaling and root planing or surgery — but this is not the treatment causing recession. It is the resolution of chronic swelling and inflammation. Before treatment, inflamed gums appear enlarged and puffy; once the inflammation resolves, the gums settle to their true, healthy position. In most cases the change is minor, and the improvement in gum health and colour far outweighs the slight change in appearance.
After active periodontal treatment, supportive maintenance every 3 to 6 months is essential to prevent disease recurrence. The frequency is more intensive in the first year following treatment — typically every 3 months — and may extend to 6-month intervals once long-term stability is established. Maintenance can be carried out either at our Antalya clinic during return visits or coordinated with your UK dentist between trips, with remote support from our team.
