Clear aligners are the most popular orthodontic treatment choice among adult patients worldwide. A series of custom-made, removable, transparent plastic trays are worn over the teeth, each applying gentle pressure to move the teeth incrementally towards the planned final position. Aligners are virtually invisible, removable for eating and cleaning, and significantly more comfortable than fixed braces for most patients.

A 3D digital scan of your teeth is taken to map the current position of each tooth, and specialist software is used to plan the movement of each tooth from its current position to the desired final position. A full series of aligners is fabricated — each worn for 1 to 2 weeks before progressing to the next. Treatment duration ranges from 3 to 18 months depending on complexity.

Clear aligners are best suited to: adults and older teenagers with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or bite issues; patients who want a discreet treatment option with minimal impact on daily life; and patients with the discipline to wear aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. Not suitable for severe skeletal discrepancies or complex bite issues requiring fixed appliances.

Conventional metal braces remain one of the most effective and reliable orthodontic appliances available. Stainless steel brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected by archwires that guide tooth movement over time. Metal braces are appropriate for a wide range of malocclusions — including complex cases that cannot be treated with aligners alone — and are the most cost-effective fixed orthodontic option.

Suitable for most types of crowding, spacing, and bite problems, with more precise control over complex tooth movements than aligners in some cases. Treatment duration is typically 12 to 24 months depending on complexity, with adjustment appointments every 6 to 8 weeks. Excellent for patients who prefer not to manage a removable appliance.

Ceramic braces work on the same principle as metal braces but use tooth-coloured or clear ceramic brackets that blend with the natural tooth colour. They offer the clinical effectiveness of fixed braces with a significantly less visible appearance — making them a popular choice for adult patients who want fixed treatment with greater discretion.

Tooth-coloured ceramic brackets are far less visible than metal, with the same clinical capability as metal braces and suitable for complex cases. Slightly more expensive than metal braces, with brackets that may be more brittle than metal and require slightly more care. Widely preferred by adult patients seeking a less conspicuous fixed option.

Lingual braces are fixed to the back (lingual) surface of the teeth rather than the front, making them completely invisible from the outside. They are the most discreet fixed orthodontic option available and are particularly popular with professionals and patients in public-facing roles who require completely hidden treatment.

Brackets are placed on the inside surfaces of the teeth and fully customised to the individual tooth anatomy for a precise fit. Suitable for a wide range of malocclusions including complex cases. An adjustment period for speech is usually required (1 to 2 weeks). Higher cost than labial braces due to the complexity of customisation, and they require an experienced orthodontist familiar with lingual technique.

Retention is the final and ongoing phase of orthodontic treatment. Once active tooth movement is complete, retainers are worn to hold the teeth in their new positions while the surrounding bone and gum tissue stabilise. Without retainers, teeth have a natural tendency to relapse towards their original positions.

Removable retainers (Essix or Hawley type) are worn full-time initially, then nights only. Fixed bonded retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth for permanent retention. Retainers are fabricated and fitted in Antalya at the end of active treatment, and replacement retainers can be made remotely using digital records if lost or damaged after returning to the UK.

The orthodontic appliances used in Turkey — clear aligner systems, self-ligating brackets, ceramic brackets — are sourced from the same international manufacturers used by leading UK orthodontic practices.
